Greetings! It is
Labor Day Weekend and rain finally wrung itself out of all the humidity that
we've been having for the past few days.
For many, perhaps, the rain is a disappointment because of interrupted
holiday plans. But for me, it is an
opportunity to drink in the cool relief of the parched eco-system of which we
are all apart. Living without A/C
this summer has been difficult but there are benefits. I've noticed a ripple effect when the
weather changes and rain fall especially releases a building tension in the
air. It's like a long ahhhh… Besides, I feel glad right now to be so
cool and relatively dry as I write and reconnect with you all. Both
October and November Salons in New York are open and available if you want to
host one. Remember that members bring
food and fun so it can be as easy as you want it to be. Merry
& Tom Brennan are hosting the October Salon in New Jersey. They are having a "Pentatonic
Percussion Party"! It has
something to do with 5 tones and drumming.
I'm looking forward to learning more and playing! Tom will lead the process. You can bring your own instrument but they
have plenty of drums, etc. for all of us.
I hope to see you there; see calendar for details. On Saturday, October 30th, you
are all invited to celebrate Halloween by going to an Artake Fun-Raising
Adventure (that happens also to raise funds) out on Long Island at Merri
Ferrell's house. The event is
called "Five Stories" and will feature an experienced
storyteller. In addition, everyone is
invited to bring to stories to share.
Each one should be no more than 15 minutes in length. There will be some food and drink provided
but all participants are also invited to bring frightfully delicious finger
food and/or dessert to share with the group.
Space is limited, so cal me at 212 645 9062 ASAP! If you want to
celebrate with us. See calendar for
further info. Colleen Lineberry just returned
from at trip to Edinburgh, Scotland.
She stayed for 3 weeks and enjoyed a feast of art at the 52nd
annual "Fringe Festival". I
just came upon a letter full of quotations Colleen sent to me a while
ago. One seems especially appropriate
now.

many cultures trees symbolize the process of transformation. The roots of the trees are associated with
the past and how we honor our heritage and ancestors. The trunk symbolizes the present life and
reveals where the life force and creative spirit are either engaged or
not. The "branches" symbolize desired future goals. " Angeles

------------------------------------------ At the end
of September, Ingrid Spears, will be traveling to Paris, France with Lilya
Noskov. Jeff Bottger will
also be going to France this fall.
For those of us who will not be going
abroad, we will be able to get a taste of France through sharing of
photos and stories at Ingrid's home in November where we will gather for our
New Jersey Salon. We are all asked to
bring French food and/or other French things to share, be they questions, stores,
quotes, art….whatever. See Calendar
for further details. Jeff
usually sends out a reminder for Salons at his place and I think it's a great
idea for whomever is hosting to do a small mailing or make a few calls. We are all busy and your friends will
appreciate the reminder. The
December Salon in New Jersey is available as well as the one in New
York. Please call me (212-645-0962)
if you want to host a Salon this year or next---in the year 2000! It's a good time to start something new. If you
haven't already put it on your calendar, please do so and stop by the Excellence VI Show on September 25 where Artake Artists
will be showing. Excellence VI is a juried
"American Crafts and Works-on-Paper" Show that will be on Bleeker
Street (@10th and 11th Streets) in Manhattan. The Second
Annual Artake show at No Ordinary Joe in Red Bank,
NJ has been scheduled to run from December 1st until January 18th,
2000. The theme is Branches and
artists in all disciplines are invited to participate, including writers as
well as musicians and performers who might like to present their work during
the run of the show. |
Rosa Valado has
been very busy. In June, she had a
solo exhibition entitled "Two Half Circles" at UFO Technologies in
Brooklyn. It was a site-specific
installation overlooking the East River and Brookly Waterfronts. Rosa then traveled to Austria for July and
August to create "Shell & Shell" which was sponsored by the
KNIE Organization. It consisted of 2
large shell structures installed on the banks of the Salzach River which
flows between Austria and Germany.
Closer to home, here in the USA, you can see "The Shell Sanctuary" installed at Drew Garden
in the Bronx until September 30th after which it may be moved to
the Bronx Museum. Rosa's work is also
part of a group exhibition called "artists and Friends of the Courthouse
Gallery and Anthology Film Archives".
In October, it will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art in
Rotterdam and there travel to France.
I like to remember the hot night back in the summer of '98 when we
gathered for a Salon inside an early version of Rosa's "Shell Sanctuary". It was seven flights up on the roof of
Rosa's studio building overlooking the Williamsburg Bridge. The dreams seeded that evening are
growing… Call Rosa at 718-389-7532 for more information. In this issue, there is an entry form as well as a
long list of possible ways to help.
Helping is fun and inspiring.
It's how we get to know each other better and how the whole event will
become more magical than any one of us could imagine. If you absolutely cannot find some fun way
to help or really don't have the time, you can contribute $20 instead. This is perfectly OK! In fact, we will need some cash to cover
installation, opening costs and mailings…so all contributions are
welcome. Please mail in the HELP!
List along with the entry form and a reproduction of the work you plan to
submit, The optional $20 check should
be made out to Artake. Please note
the deadline of October 15th for sending in the forms! The early deadline is to benefit us all by
allowing time to properly plan so that we can notify the press and send out
invites in a timely fashion. Please
also include a narrative, bio and a brief statement about your work in
relation to the theme Branches.
Installation of the show will take place on Tuesday, November 30th. A 20% donation to Artake from any sales is
suggested to help us all grow together. Penelope Poor ARTAKE Director 212 645 0962 HIGHLIGHTS
FROM BURMA TRIP ON EXHIBIT AT ASHFORTH WARBURG IN NYC
"Mingabala". That
means 'greetings' in Burmese.
"Jayzoobe" means 'thank you'. Now, you are all set to go.
Or better yet, visit the exhibit of images from Myanmar, the Golden
Land, at the Ashforth Warburg exhibition space. The
photographs by Diane Waller, taken of the archeology, landscape, markets,
people and religion of the Burmese people, which have for so long been kept
isolated from the rest of the world, are compelling in their simplicity. The Burmese are a beautiful people in an
oppressed but not depressed culture.
From Yangon to Bagan to Mandalay to Pindaya to Inle Lake, the images
record the life of an open, generous and friendly people whose way of life
exemplifies complete faith in Buddhism.
The coountry side and dress of the local residents are colorful and
captivating. Diane
Waller, photographer, is also the Executive Vice President of Ashforth
Warburg and manages the downtown office where the exhibit is displayed. The downtown office has continuing
exhibits by New York artists, usually of New York City architecture or street
scenery. The
Ashforth Warburg exhibition space is located on Broadway between 10th
and 11th Streets across from Grace Church in Greenwich
Village. The hours of viewing are
between 9:30am and 5:30pm or by appointment. |

les Pyrenees!
May
2000: A continuing exploration of beauty and
culture in France for artists and art lovers.
After days
of driving through the Pyrenees, Lorraine
Niemela and Marielle Sheldon created a magnificent two week tour
that begins on the Mediterranean
at Collioure (inspiration of many twentieth century artists), ventures through
the northern rustic reaches of
les Pyrenees (home to humans from prehistoric times) and concludes on the
Basque coast (with a special day
trip to Balboa, Spain and the celebrated Guggenheim). The pace is
comfortable - with beautiful
locations to paint and photograph, specially selected sites to visit and three/four
night stays in small atmospheric
hotels along the way. As they say, 'Not
to be missed!' For information,

bad news
is, there is not key to the Universe.
The
good news is, it has been left unlocked.
