Greetings!
Two
months ago, it was snowing and today we’re having a heat wave! The unfolding of each day, week and month
into months can be so surprising and delightful.
The Salon at Marge
Chandler’s house evolved in just such an easy and interesting way. She had gathered all sorts of art supplies
for us to play with but we ended up talking.
It was the kind of freewheeling talk that has many surprising nook and
crannies of discovery and connection.
In addition, we all enjoyed meeting Marge’s friend, Bev Sirianni.
Midge
Guerrera had also planned an activity for our April
Salon in New Jersey but instead it was a fine evening spent installing the
“April in Asbury” show at Midge’s Ninth Floor Gallery. The show has closed so please pick up your
work if you haven’t already done so.
Because there was so little response from the participating artists to
Midge’s request for P.R. info to include in a press release, she has offered
to give us some tips on the process at one of our upcoming salons. If you’re especially interested, call me
and I will try to let you know when.
If you can’t make the summer salons, then send in your questions and I
will put the answers in my next letter.
We have the show at No Ordinary
Joe coming up next fall in Red
Bank, so let’s get ready!
Up coming member
shows include: “Visions and Verse” a show of mixed media paintings by Colleen
Lineberry at the Monmouth County Library, June 3 through July 12;
Botanical paintings by Melissa Bronwen Pyle at the Art & Attic in
Red Bank, through July 6th.
“Americanos: Latino Life in the US” including photos by Miriam
Romais at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, through June 6th
(and also coming next fall to the Museum of the City of New York); “the City
works”, a photography exhibition of people at work in outdoor Manhattan,
including photos by Diane Waller, at Ashforth Warburg Downtown all
Summer through September 16th.

See the calendar
for details about several summer opportunities to study with Lorraine
Niemela: An Artist Retreat” on June 23rd in East Brunswick and
a “Watercolor Series Class Intensive”, July 13 – 15 at the Newark
Museum. She will also be instructing
4 day Watercolor Workshops in June, July and August at Peter’s Valley in
Layton, NJ. Call (973) 948-5200 for
further information and an application. |
Remember, the
flyer covers two months, June and July, so use the calendar on the flip side
of this page or make a note in your own date book. Because talking, sharing
and connecting seem to be the most important thing we do, the activities
indicated may or may not happen.
Please feel free to bring art, ideas, songs, poetry, stories, etc. to
share.
A brief overview
of upcoming salons follows. Please
check the calendar for additional information.
For the New Jersey Salon in June, we will meet at Mary and Greg
Orr’s home in Atlantic Highlands.
In July for the
New Jersey Salon, we will gather at Midge Guerrera’s home overlooking
Deal Lake and the ocean in Asbury Park.
Please note the earlier starting time of 7PM. It’s so we can walk to the beach and
gather sand in the daylight to make the free-form sand candles. Please bring
a container for your sand. I think
it’s fun to do but again we don’t have
to do the candle project if most don’t feel like it. The important thing is to get together,
have fun and talk. Oh yes…start
collecting and bring for melting and re-use any candle pieces that you might
have. For the June Salon in Manhattan, we
will gather at Madame X to listen to Frederique on the piano and in July,
there will be a Surprise Salon in Chelsea.
Please call me if you plan to join either gathering so I know whom to
expect.
A few name
possibilities have come in for this newsletter. Please bring your ideas to the next salon so we can decide what
works! Mid summer (July 17 & 18) is the time
to go out to New Mexico for the 28th Annual Arts Festival run by
Native Americans and featuring their handmade traditional and contemporary
art. In addition, there is
Pueblo-style food available and a program of traditional dances and
music. See the calendar for more
information.
The next weekend
in July brings us to the Artake Family FUN-Raising Garage Sale. Join the fun and help make it
successful. Sign up early with a list
of any large items or categories so
they can be featured in the classified ad. Lastly,
congratulations to Bee Tilney who had her painting titled, “Brick
Bathers”, selected to be part of the Figurative Small Works Show at the
Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach.
It will be on view until June 12th. Penny Poor, ARTAKE Director 212-645-0962 |
