GREETINGS! I did a double take. Even though I knew Columbia Pictures had
come to film "Finding Forrester" starring Sean Connery, I was still
startled to actually see him a few feet away, walking along the path here at
the General Theological Seminary where I live. They have come to take advantage of the visual history stored
in the wonderful old seminary buildings that were built in the 1800's. Compared to the Seminary, ARTAKE is barely born. In fact, recently I learned at a
"Life Cycles of Non-Profits" workshop that we are still for the
most part in the "start-up" phase which is about trying on
different things with little energy left for systemizing operations. However, ARTAKE is in its 8th
year and poised for growth. We need
to define what our unique are and create a foundation that will support our
growth. We will be having a retreat
this summer for anyone who is interested in becoming more involved. Merri Ferrell of Northport, LI has
offered to host our gathering. This
is about growing your organization
in a sustainable and enjoyable way. Call
me at 212 645 0962 if you're interested in participating or send in any
suggestions to 175 9th Ave., NYC 10011 or e-mail me at penelope_nyc@yahoo.com. ARTAKE was incorporated in 1992. Originally, ARTAKE was about artists of
many different disciplines collaborating to create special dance theatre
events that offered innovative ways to view fine art. . ____________________________________ "Creative individuals are open

As you may have
noticed last year, Eileen Moon had to step down from her position as
editor of "AHA!" when she took over as Managing Editor of the
"Two River Times". So,
thanks go to Sheilagh Casey who is now volunteering as editor of
"AHA!". Send your creative
efforts for our next issue to Sheilagh at 18 First Street, Rumson, NJ 07760
or e-mail it to her at sheilagh@aol.com I spoke with Reed Bickley, who's
been ultra busy for various reasons but who is committed to making our web
page happen and will somehow find the time.
We are currently figuring out technical ways and means to facilitate
the process of updating the site such as e-mailing complete items to him so
he doesn't have to scan "Loose Leaf" and "AHA!" in, which
is very time consuming. Please e-mail
Reed at disneyfan1313@go.com with any suggestions or comments. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen
circumstances we will not be able to continue meeting at the River Center on
a regular basis. So, we must fall
back on our established routine. Call
to host a salon. It's warm so outside
spaces are also possible. At the
moment, we are most in need of space for June 9th and July 14th
in New Jersey. Please call me at 212
645 0962 or e-mail me at penelope_nyc@yahoo.com. We also need space for our August and
September salons in New Jersey. See
planning calendar and sign up. _______________________________________

Spanish Proverb _______________________________________ In June, for both our New Jersey and
New York salons, we will explore and discuss change and its importance to
creativity. "It is said that the
only constant is change…" These words jumped out at me recently. They were on the last page of a paper
sample book that I've been carrying around for years and using little by
little. Jane Warren will be leaving for 4
months of travel abroad on June 12th. She e-mailed that she expects to visit Portugal, Spain, France,
Switzerland, Austria, Sweden Finland and Estonia. She added, "not in that order…and maybe other places." She will be staying in touch via e-mail so
contact her at jtwarr123@aol.com for news of her
adventure. Also, thanks go to Jane
for donating her time and talent to providing photographic documentation of
last year's "Branches" show at No Ordinary Joe in Red Bank,
NJ. And, our apologies for not
properly giving her credit for the "Branches" photo in the last
issue of "Loose Leaf". Check out Al Zanetti's web address at www.positivenewsnetwork.net/al_zanetti.htm.
He said he's getting 12 to 15 hits per day and has a new "Guest
Book" for your responses. Penelope Poor ARTAKE Director "When
you go out to paint, try to forget what it is you've got in front of you, a
tree or a field. Just think: here is
a little square of blue, an oblong of pink, a streak of yellow and paint
exactly what you see." Claude

Many very talented
people came together but after a few years, everything fell apart for various
reasons including my own state of burnout.
I needed to reassess my life and that of ARTAKE. We had several large gatherings to discuss
what people wanted. One such
gathering in 1995 was facilitated by Midge Guerrera who then also
helped us create a three-year strategic plan. Many of the ideas set forth in that effort have come to pass
but interestingly enough not exactly as planned. In reflection, It appears that the clarification achieved in
creating the document opened up the possibility for it to happen. Shortly after adopting the plan, the idea
to continue the positive energy of the focus groups in a salon format bubbled
up during an interview I had with Eileen Moon. For her article, she asked, "When?" So, I
picked a date in July. Thus, the
salons were born in the summer of 1995.
This July we will celebrate our 5th anniversary for that
beginning as well as the birth of "AHA!" which began in a similarly
spontaneous way during a conversation with Kate Reynolds. The
formalities of actualizing both the salons and "AHA!" came after
the inspiration. It was very magical
and the memories of those moments still amaze and delight me. I celebrate both Kate for the graphic
design and Eileen, who came on board as editor of "AHA!", for
volunteering so much of their time to help make "AHA!" a
reality Please use the attached
Funraising sheet to send in your ideas and contributions to help make
"AHA!" happen and support your friends. It is up to you. In addition, please
bring any thoughts and suggestions about our possible "Art X change" page for "Loose
Leaf" and our web site. See the
attached sample page. Help develop
this; the sample is only a starting
place. Please send ideas to me if you
can't get to a salon. Andre Cholmondeley and Cheri Jiosne are getting
their summer shows schedule together.
E-mail from them said, "Looks like later in the summer, August or
so, we will see some kind of tour. We
hope to sprinkle a couple of gigs around this area (Tri-state) before
that. For more information, check
their web page at www.ufomusic.com or stop by Second Nature
Health Foods in Red Bank. Congratulations go to Phyllis Rosser
who had an exhibit this Spring of her newest wood sculpture at the Ceres
Gallery in Soho, New York City. Congratulations also go to Rosa
Valado who had a preview of her "Shell Sanctuary" in the
January 16th issue of the New York Times this year. Although originally scheduled to stay
only for one month, the "Shell Sanctuary" will now remain installed
at the Drew Gardens, Bronx, NY indefinitely.
Rosa's sculpture is a transparent structure made of welded steel ribs
with aluminum screening wired on. It
is 15 feet wide and can hold 30 people.
Call Rosa at 718 599 9276 to find out more and support her
community-oriented work. |

Labyrinths are very ancient - they have
been used since antiquity as a means of meditation and prayer. The earliest recorded use by the Christian
Church is one at the Basilica of Sr. Reparatus, Orleansville in Algeria about
the year A.D. 460. At the center are
the words "Sancta Ecclesia" - The Holy Church. From early Christian times many of the
faithful would make a vow to visit the Holy Land and walk in Jesus's
footsteps. However, as time went on
this became more difficult as Christianity spread to increasingly distant
lands. Also, finances, health, or
inter-kingdom wars created travel problems.
To solve this "pilgrimage problem," the Roman Catholic
Church designated several cathedrals to serve as substitute
"Jerusalems." In the floors
of these cathedrals was a design known as a labyrinth…which is not the same
as a maze. A maze has several
"dead ends" and trick turns - a labyrinth does not. Its path doubles back parallel to itself
as it goes directly to the center which represents the Holy Spirit or God's
love for his people. |
