Greetings! As I take the train back to Manhattan from my March trip to
NJ for the ARTAKE Salon, snow is rapidly covering the ground and giving us a
bit of Winter before Spring. Change was the theme of the March Salon at Christine
Gizzi’s house and we talked of moving and death. Christine just sold her house, and lately
so many people have died. In the
last two weeks, 4 people I know have died including ARTAKE member, Jane
Scott at 85 years. She was a renowned bonsai artist. After 50 years of perfecting the art, she
said the more important ingredient in her work was to “sit and study” - good
advice for all of us. With death comes the idea of birth and re-birth and
birthdays. Al Zanetti collects
birthdays. He has over 30,000! He has agreed to do something creative
with ARTAKE birthdays. Please call Al
at 732-821-4848 if you want to be part of this art work. (The birth year isn’t necessary) We will also most certainly cook up some
kind of fun celebration for all those who come forth…perhaps a monthly
Birthday Bash!?!
I got the NJSCA grant in with
life saving help from my friends.
THANK YOU ALL!! I learned a
lot in the process including that its time to move forward on the proposed
projects whether or not we get the NJSCA dollars. A MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY is
in the works. Please let me know if you have any creative and/or practical
ideas and suggestions. What you think
is important. Fun ideas for
fundraising are also needed. As you
can see Al has generously offered to donate proceeds from the sale of his
“Love” Serigraph. So help get the
word out! Midge Guerra is hosting
the APRIL SALON in ASBURY PARK. She has most of the ingredients for making
magic leather pouches but you will need to bring special objects to add plus
your own scissors and glue or sewing materials. Midge is also generously promoting our APRIL
in ASBURY exhibit at 601 Bangs Avenue in her Ninth Floor
Gallery. A reminder for those artists
who are participating in the show: Bring you art on that evening (unless
you’ve arranged otherwise). Jane
Warren is creating the labels and master list so call her at 732-741-8105
with art work specs, contact information and your artist’s statement. The APRIL NEW YORK SALON will be at the Dia Center for the Arts. Their current exhibit includes Robert Irwin: Excursus: Homage to the Square; “Stan Douglas & Douglas Gordon Double Vision; Andy Warhol: Shadows; and Thomas Schutte: Scenewright. On the 23rd, there will also be a poetry reading by Peter Reading and Sonia Sanchez. Because of that, there is a small 2 hour window of opportunity to see the exhibits for FREE from 5 to 7PM. |
The reading is $5 which we can stay for and then go to a nearby café for refreshments. Call me * if you plan to attend so I know whom to expect. Call the Dia Center at 212-989-5566 for more information about the exhibits. The MAY SALON in NEW JERSEY will be at Marge Chandler’s home and studio in Howell. Recycle your TRASH TO TREASURE! Bring some of those mysterious
things that you’ve been collecting but are not sure why. Marge teaches art and will have all the
necessary supplies to put things together. For fun and inspiration, we will
probably work together in small groups.
She lives an easy 5 minutes off the Garden State Parkway. See you there! The MAY SALON in NEW
YORK will start at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The current exhibits include: Picasso: Painter & Sculptor in Clay; Mirror of the Medieval World; Anselm
Kiefer: Works on Paper, 1969 - 1993;
and The Treasury of St. Francis of
Assisi. The museum is open until 9PM on Friday night and features live
chamber music from 5 to 8PM. Afterwards, we will sit and talk in a nearby
café. Suggestions as to where are
welcome! Otherwise, we’ll just wing
it. Again, if you know in advance,
please call me* so I will know who’s coming and we can coordinate
connecting. We will definitely gather
in the lobby from 8:45PM until they close as 9PM – so we can at least leave
together. Call the Met for more
exhibit information at 212-879-5500. If you have
any suggestions for future NEW YORK SALON destinations, including artist
studios, we could visit, please let me know for June and July
especially. Also, we are going to
start having additional ARTAKE
ADVENTURES. The first will be a
very special visit to LA MANO POTTERY in Chelsea at 237 West 18th
Street. We have been invited to come
on Saturday morning, May 22nd, to make a piece of pottery in their
garden. If we get enough people
together, it will be only $5; otherwise $10. Both are very reasonable – so sign up for an adventure! Refreshments are included. Please call me* if you are interested. For those of you who are interested in being more involved
in ARTAKE and discussing future possibilities, there will be a weekend
retreat this summer (probably the end of July) on a beautiful 500 acre
property on Long Island – only about one hour out of New York City. There are rules because of the Coast Guard
presence but Property Manager, Curator and Hostess, Merri Ferrell,
will guide us in exploring the woods and miles of pristine Northshore
beach. It’s a beautiful environment
in which to envision ARTAKE’s future
as a living system. Call me * for
further details. Penny
