Greetings! Spring-cleaning continues. I'm still clearing, cleaning and
organizing. I found a program from
the 1996 Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival.
All over the cover I had written notes from listening to Allen
Ginsberg speak…a few are as follows: He said that Bob Dylan told him:
"the purpose of art is to stop time." Other quotes from Allen Ginsberg
himself were: "First
thought, best thought." "Take a
friendly attitude toward all thoughts." "Candor ends
paranoia." "Drunk or
foolish, day or night, you're all right." "Kindness is
the sweetest of the small notes in the world's ink." "Magic is the
total appreciation of chance." C. Bangs called to say that the
BMW Bar in Chelsea (NYC) is now exhibiting small works of art and is looking
for artists to show. She heard about
it through a friend who performs there.
The BMW Bar is known for showcasing new musical talent. If you're interested, call Viktor Allen at
(212) 727-0547 for more info. For our May salon in New Jersey, we
will enjoy an introduction workshop called "Journaling, the Creative
Process". Participate in a
process that sparks, harnesses and redirects life flow into creative
energy. Led by Dr. Joyce Block
and Dr. Stevi Lischin, the journal process is based on the teachings
of Carl Jung and developed into the Intensive Journal Process by the late Ira
Progoff. Stevi and Joyce have further
integrated these ideas into the workshops they lead with artists, writers and
musicians. Bring an empty notebook or
your journal. If you have any
questions or concerns about the process, call Joyce at (732) 263-0580 or
e-mail her a drjoyceblock@monmouth.com. We will meet at the River Center in Red
Bank at 8pm. Please come promptly. Merry Brennan sent a long report
by e-mail about the environmental threats to the New Jersey/New York coastal
waters. They still are working hard
to prevent dumping of "contaminated dredge spoils" into the ocean
off Sandy Hook. However, the newest
threat is from Amboy Aggregates of South Amboy, NJ, who wants to mine sand
and gravel from the ocean floor off the New Jersey Coast from Long Branch to
Belmar. The profitable strip mining
would also remove tons of offshore habitats.
* The public comment period on this proposal is open until April 10th. Please send comments to: @ Frederique played the piano with
her usual talent at our March Salon at Madam X. You can usually hear her play there on Monday nights from 7
to10:30pm. When I first arrived, she
was busy recording a song, "The Best is Yet to Come", for a
wedding. Recently, she was
commissioned to compose an orchestral piece for the French Conservatory where
she also teaches piano. Frederique's
trio has made a CD called "Secret Love" featuring the popular music
she performs at Madam X. To get a
copy of the CD, piano lessons, or a special performance for a party, call
Frederique at (212) 437 0322 Antoinette Maclachan is still in
Thailand but plans to return to New York City by the end of April. To set up an appointment right away for
Thai massage or Shiatsu with Antoinette, you can e-email her in advance at wildredant@hotmail.com. Ann McGovern has discovered the
joys of making hand made books and may have time to share her knowledge with us
during a salon at her place in New York City. However, her schedule of traveling and work would exhaust most
of us and is even more remarkable considering she's about to have her 70th
birthday. (Seventy years young
certainly applies to Ann!) She
celebrated in advance by contributing to the renovation of the Muhlenberg
Library branch on 23rd Street and 7th Avenue in
Manhattan. The children's reading
room will be named in her honor. It's
meaningful and appropriate considering her ongoing career as a well-known and
loved children's book author. In addition,
throughout her life, libraries have always been an important resource, so she
is giving back. Congratulations go to Eileen Moon, who
will be attending the NJ Press Association Awards Banquet in Princeton at the
end of April with a lot of prizes in hand.
She won first place for ' Freshest Treatment of a Tired Topic', for a
piece about weird things people believe about the weather, and a second place
for responsible journalism in the public service category for "Mega
Hurts" , an issue devoted to the impact of last summer's power outages
in the two river area. ( She shares this one with Scott Longfield, TRT
Photographer and Sheilagh Casey, Reporter.) Eileen also won third place for editorial comment for two
editorials: one called
"Something Wicked This way Comes" and one about the power outages
called "Act of God? Not this Time". Nancy Poor sent an article about
Labyrinths from the New York Times. It said that "the ancient and
mysterious design has been traced back more than 3,500 years and has surfaced
in different cultures all over the world…most modern labyrinths are patterned
after the one at Chartre Cathedral in Paris." There are two new ones in New York City outside on the north
end of Union Square at 17th Street between Broadway and Park
Avenue South. Try it! Walking one is a great antidote to the
fast pace of city life. ARTAKE's website at www.artake.org
is under construction. Please check
it out and e-mail any questions. Comments and/or suggestions to Reed
Bickley at disneyfan1313@go.com. At the beginning of March, I met with Tracy Challenger,
Executive Director of the River Center in Red Bank. She has offered River Center Space for us to meet in New Jersey
when we don't have elsewhere to go.
She also has a terrific idea for an art project using back
alleys. She's been interested in back
alleys for some time and has photographed them in many cities. She also knows something of the history
and significance of back alleys. Red
Bank happens to have some very interesting alley ways…so it makes sense to
use them (see below). Our first salon
at the River Center will be a round table to discuss possibilities and Tracy
will be there to brainstorm with us.
It's still just the seed of an idea so come and help us cultivate the
ground and grow this possibility. The
salon will be on April 14th at 8pm. See calendar for full details. Penelope Poor ARTAKE Director F P O L R A G C O E T S T E N Alleys… Secret paces that help keep us connected Photos By Tracy Challenger |

Guerrera and Lorraine Niemela will all be part of the activities
during the “festival of the Arts” at the Monmouth Reform Temple in Tinton
Falls, NJ. The festival runs from the
evening of April 8th through the 12th. Daily admission is only $6 and includes
the following activities on April 10: Marge’s workshop is called “Centers in the
Art Room” and runs from 9:45am to 11:45am.
It’s a hands on workshop for educators that’s about “setting up
continuous flow in the class room.” Lorraine will offer
her demonstration called “Watercolor without Expectation” from 3:00pm to
4:45pm Midge will offer a
seminar for artists called “Get the Word Out” which is about “Publicizing the
Arts and the artist”. Call the Temple at 732
747-8278 for more information as there are also many other activities. Colleen Lineberry is moving back to her house in
May. She is sad to leave the ocean
but not so sad to return to the home that she grew up in and that her father
built with his own hands. Leaving it
for a time, she is now more ready to
consider selling her family home. In
the meantime, she has discovered the joys of painting on fabric. Call her at (732) 775-6147 if you are
interested in buying a house or some hand painted fabric. Jane Warren hosted our February
salon in New Jersey and Lorraine Niemela guided us in a search for
symbols in our lives. She said that a
symbol can be whatever keeps coming up in one's life and work, and that it
can be "bigger than words" and often has meaning beyond words. Symbols are personal but become
universal. After the discussion, we
then dialogued between ourselves and the symbol to find it’s meaning. Most people used words but I found my left
hand (non-dominant) was eager to become involved. To fill you in…for 2
months, I've been painting with my left hand and finding the results very
exciting and surprising. So, I
allowed myself to try the more challenging task of writing and drawing
symbols with my left hand (see below).
Although it still looks childish and wobbly, the improvement over when
I first started is remarkable. Both April and May
Salons in New York will be in Chelsea.
On April 24th, we will celebrate the earth and our
remarkable eco-system. Using "A
Simpler Way: by Margaret Wheatley and Myron Kellner-Rogers. We will explore how "Life is creative…life
behaves in messy ways. It succeeds in
creating, responding and adapting by using processes that have no connection
to our machine led ways of thinking…playful enterprises are alert. They are open to information, always
seeking more, yearning for surprises".
Come play with us and be surprised by synchronicity and extraordinary
connections. We will use "A
Simpler Way" as a catalyst and guide to get to where we need to go as a
group. On May 22nd, "Back
Fence Conversations" will offer us an opportunity to celebrate
relationships and the importance of casual conversation. Bring anecdotes, art and your presence to
share in relationship with the group.
As P. Teilhard de Chardin wrote, "True union, the union of heart
and spirit, does not enslave, nor does it neutralize the individuals which it
brings together, it super-personalizes them.” hhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhh FOOD FOR
THOUGHT ABOUT RIVERS "Desire is like the movement of water. It is the nature of water to move with
gravity. If water is held back in its
path, a pressure will build up. This pressure
will gradually erode whatever is holding it back. It is the nature of the water to flow in a particular direction
and the water has no preference as to what form it follows go get there. All rivers lead eventually to the
sea. All rivers find the path of
least resistance. Thwarted desires
are often saying that we are not traveling the path of least resistance. If our own consciousness is inward instead
of outward, we will find another way?
